This is a shake proof washer (locking washer) this used in many hydraulic applications such as brake hoses and clutch hoses. It is very important because this keeps the hydraulic line jam nut from vibrating look during driving. Overtime the teeth in the lock washer can become flat and loose their ability to grip the jam nut. Every time you change your brake hoses make sure you use new fasteners.
